Hospital Privileges

In general, OMIC prefers that physicians maintain active hospital privileges in each location where they practice. From a patient safety perspective, maintaining privileges enables the physician to more effectively admit patients who require hospitalization. However, with the shift from hospital-based surgery to outpatient surgery, some physicians are electing to forego hospital privileges, particularly when maintaining privileges requires them to provide emergency call coverage. Similarly, physicians with non-surgical or very limited surgical practices and those with 100% (extraocular) refractive surgery practices often elect not to maintain hospital privileges.

If a physician elects to not maintain hospital privileges, an appropriate protocol should be established to ensure patients can be admitted promptly if/when needed. OMIC’s risk managers are available to provide confidential advice and assistance. You can reach them at (800) 562-6642, option 4.

If your hospital privileges have been revoked, suspended, or restricted, please reach out to your underwriter or call (800) 562-6642, option 1 to connect with an underwriting representative.
