Description:
Documentation of ophthalmic care provides vital information that guides providers on care provided on previous visits and is a resource in determining ongoing care. A lack of documentation or incomplete documentation can lead to patient harm and can also lead to allegations of negligent care and damages in the form of a medical malpractice suit or claim. In this course, actual Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company closed medical malpractice claims will be used to illustrate how the lack of documentation or incomplete documentation negatively impacted the defense of a medical malpractice claim. This course explains the importance of documentation and provides recommendations on documentation and strategies to avoid patient harm and mitigate liability. Objectives At the completion of this course, attendees will be able to (1) explain the role documentation plays in patient safety and defense of medical malpractice claims alleging negligent care, (2) list the elements of documentation in diagnostic and preoperative care, informed consent and intraoperative and postoperative care and (3) describe risk management strategies and resources to help mitigate liability risk.
