Policyholder Services

As a technician, do I need my own professional liability policy?

Because coverage is automatically extended under the employing ophthalmologist/entity’s OMIC policy to non-physician employees (other than optometrists and nurse anesthetists) for services they render within the scope of their licensure, training, and employment by and on behalf of the insured employer, it is not necessary to secure your own professional liability policy. Non-physician employees generally share the liability limits with the employer, but separate limits may be available if required by state law or by hospitals or other credentialing organizations for the purpose of obtaining staff privileges.

Publicly-traded insurance companies exist to make profits for shareholders while physician-owned carriers often return profits to their policyholders.
