Does OMIC cover implantation of permanent keratoprostheses?

Yes. A permanent keratoprosthesis is an artificial cornea used to improve vision in patients with severely damaged corneas for whom corneal transplants are not a viable option. As a recognized procedure for end-stage corneal disease, OMIC covers the implantation of artificial corneas, such as the Boston Keratoprosthesis (KPro), AlphaCorTM Keratoprosthesis, and Osteo-Odonto Keratoprosthesis (OOKP), under the standard Surgery Class 3 coverage. Surgeons who implant keratoprostheses should conduct an adequate informed consent discussion that addresses not only the potential risks and complications of this high risk procedure but also the procedure’s limitations and, where applicable, the off-label or unapproved FDA status of the device.
