New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting - September 26
OMIC will begin its September conference schedule at the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township, New Jersey. This annual meeting brings together ophthalmologists from across the state for education, networking, and professional development.
Michelle Pineda, MBA, OMIC Risk Manager, will present Lessons Learned from Glaucoma Claims: Closing the Loop, Medical Record Amendments, and Co-management Guidance from 8:15–9:00 a.m.
The presentation will cover essential practice management topics including:
- Implementing safety protocols to close the loop on referrals and test recommendations
- Proper medical record documentation and amendment procedures
- Telephone screening protocols for non-clinical staff
- Prescription refill procedures
- Defining clear roles and responsibilities for healthcare teams in co-management scenarios with optometrists
Hawaii Ophthalmological Society Meeting - September 27
On Saturday, September 27, 2025, OMIC will continue its conference participation at the Hawaii Ophthalmological Society (HOS) meeting at the Entrepreneurs Sandbox in Honolulu, Hawaii. OMIC Board Member Andrew G. Iwach, MD, and long-time OMIC Risk Manager Hans K. Bruhn, MHS, will present the same comprehensive glaucoma presentation: Lessons Learned from Glaucoma Claims: Closing the Loop, Medical Record Amendments, and Co-management Guidance.
This comprehensive physician session will examine real OMIC glaucoma cases that resulted in significant settlements, highlighting critical risk management lessons. Through actual case studies, attendees will learn about the litigation risks associated with delayed glaucoma diagnoses and the importance of timely specialist referrals.
ASHRM 2025 Annual Conference - September 28-30
OMIC will conclude its September conference participation at the ASHRM 2025 Annual Conference, taking place September 28–30, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. This event brings together healthcare risk management professionals from across the country to share strategies, tools, and solutions for reducing liability and improving patient safety.
Jeannette Domask, MPH, OMIC Risk Manager, and Marta Garrett, JD, OMIC Senior Litigation Analyst, will present Anesthesia Liability: Provider Scope of Practice and Impact of Regulations on Monday, September 29, at 10:15 a.m. Their comprehensive session will cover:
- Legal framework and regulations governing the scope of practice of anesthesia providers in ambulatory and office settings
- Liability risks involving anesthesia administration, with case examples that highlight contributing factors leading to litigation
- Risk management strategies to ensure anesthesia practices and providers follow best practices to reduce potential malpractice exposure
The presentation will also explore broader considerations such as the differences between hospital, ambulatory surgery center, and office-based anesthesia; the roles and responsibilities of anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and RNs; patient selection and preparation protocols; and the importance of thorough consent and documentation. Additionally, the session will address how state laws and supervision requirements can affect anesthesia practices and create potential liability exposures.
