Refractive Surgery Information

Although the standard OMIC policy excludes coverage for refractive surgery procedures, OMIC insureds can request coverage for specific procedures following review and approval of a supplemental refractive surgery questionnaire. A questionnaire is required for each type of procedure performed. No additional premium applies for this valuable coverage.

Because approximately one-third of OMIC's policyholders perform at least one type of refractive surgery procedure, OMIC believes that prudent refractive surgery underwriting guidelines help protect both the company and its insureds. These guidelines, Guide to OMIC Refractive Surgery Requirements, based on sensible medical practice and sound risk management principles, were developed by practicing refractive surgeons to reduce the likelihood of claims and to aid in the defensibility of any resulting claims. OMIC is proud that its claims experience is significantly better than industry average, and we believe this is due in large part to the company's underwriting guidelines.

OMIC routinely reviews its refractive surgery guidelines and modifies them when warranted. Most revisions to date, many of which were the result of policyholder feedback, have served to expand, rather than reduce, coverage.

Physicians are invited to contact an underwriting representative at (800) 562-6642 or via email at underwriting@omic.com if they have any questions regarding OMIC's guidelines for refractive surgery.
